Decramastic roofs are made of interlocking metal tiles. They are popular in New Zealand since they are light and quick to install. Rather than individual small tiles, decramastic roof tiles are long horizontal tiles. New decramastic roofs look similar to concrete tile roofs.
Decramastic (Metal Tile) Roof Repair, Maintenance and Painting
There are some common issues with decramastic roofs. Due to their rough surface they are susceptible to moss, mildew and moulds, especially in wetter areas of Auckland and New Zealand.
Deramastic tiles are relatively soft and careless walking on a decramastic roof can cause dents which in turn can create areas where water does not run off easily. Like corrugated iron roofs, this can ultimately lead to rust developing and therefore leaks. Where the tiles are dented, they can also lift and on a windy day, water can penetrate on a cause damage to the roof structure and ceiling.
Like corrugated iron roofs, decramastic roofs need to be regularly checked for damage and leaks and need to be maintained. Individual decramastic tiles can be replaced if they are dented or damaged.
We advise to check decramastic tile roofs frequently (every three years) so that any dents, rust spots and leaks can be addressed before damage to the roof structure occurs.

1) Moss Treatment
Apply a moss treatment to sterilise all roof surfaces prior to roof repairs and coating applications.
2) Preparation and Repairs
Dents in the tiles will be removed where possible or replaced where they cannot be repaired to a high standard. Fixings to be checked and secured or replaced if necessary. All ridges, flashings and valleys are repaired or replaced as required.
This process may take a few weeks to kill off the growth before it can be removed and may require an additional soft wash prior to the application of any coatings.
3) Roof Cleaning
Pressure clean to be performed to remove all excess unwanted materials in preparation for the roof coating system. At this time all gutters are cleared of unwanted debris including a soft wash rinse of the exterior surfaces.
4) Rust Treatment
Any rusty areas will be treated with rust converter. We use a ‘state of the art’, quick drying anti-rust products which will hold and prevent any further corrosion.
5) Base Coat
One heavy coat of our high build ultra premium 100% acrylic roof coating will be applied.
6) Stone Chip Coating
An even coating of our specialist stone chip will be embedded into our wet basecoat
7) Top Coats
Two coats of our ultra premium 100% acrylic roof paint will then be applied across the stone chip surface to seal the chip in place and give a high quality finish to the colour preference of your choice.
Please note Decramastic tiles produced in NZ during specific time periods can contain asbestos in the mastic (glue) of the tile. If the sales consultant is concerned that asbestos may be present, it will be brought to your attention at the time of quoting. We have safe and cost effective solutions available for roofs with asbestos present.
